ZAYN's New Album Has An 'Optimistic Tone,' Still Set To Drop Later This Year

Expect to hear some growth on ZAYN's as-yet-untitled sophomore effort, says RCA Records CEO Peter Edge.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the head honcho offered up some goods on the former One Direction's next musical chapter, admitting that listeners will hear the 24-year-old in a brand-new light. "It wasn’t easy making that decision and having the courage to step out first and make a record," Edge, who is working with the star on the LP, revealed. "This album has a more optimistic tone to it after coming through that more challenging time. It shows a lot of growth."

Despite the lack of success for the set's lead single "Still Got Time," Edge said the cut, which may or may not have the support from featured guest PARTYNEXTDOOR, is still representative of the follow-up to his debut, Mind of Mine. "If you think about the lyrics," Edge explained. "It's talking about how it’s great to be young and knowing you’ve still got time to do everything you want to do in life."

Meanwhile, Edge pointed out that the musical styles of ZAYN's former One Direction bandmates is something that they all do indeed think about. "While we’re conscious of what everybody else is doing, I think we’re on the page that we just have to get on with releasing the music," Edge confessed. "Everybody is going to coexist. What’s emerging is that there are different musical styles that each member is getting into."

"Zayn just wants to make his music and do what he does," he continued. "I think he definitely wants a lot of himself in there, and I think that’s what the last record had — it maybe even gave people more insight than they thought they were going to get."

ZAYN's sophomore set is due later this year.
