James Van Der Beek recently shared that he has been battling colorectal cancer, and is opening up about the shocking diagnosis in a new interview with PEOPLE.

The actor told the outlet that he was in "amazing cardiovascular shape" while trying to stick to a healthy diet and active lifestyle, but noticed a change to his bowel movements. He tried to improve his condition by cutting coffee and cream in his coffee, but when that didn't help, he decided to "get this checked out."

After undergoing a colonoscopy, James received the troubling and surprising news that he had cancer. He remembered, "I felt really good coming out of anesthesia, that I'd finally done it. Then the gastroenterologist said — in his most pleasant bedside manner — that it was cancer. I think I went into shock."

Van Der Beek is currently in treatment and has not commented on the status of his health, but told PEOPLE, "I'm very cautiously optimistic. I’m in a place of healing, my energy levels are great. When I’ve been out of the woods completely for what feels like a responsible amount of time, I’ll circle back and let you know." He added, "I have a lot to live for."

The Dawson's Creek actor first revealed he had colorectal cancer in an Instagram post shared just a few days ago. He shared, "Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis. And I’m one of them," adding later on, "I’ve been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before. I’m in a good place and feeling strong. It’s been quite the initiation, and I’ll tell you more when I’m ready."
